Canadese veteranen in Knokke-Heist
Komende vrijdag arriveert een grote groep Canadezen in Knokke-Heist. Het gaat om een 50-tal veteranen van de “Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders” uit Ontario. "The Glens", zoals ze meestal genoemd worden, landden op 6 juni 1944 te Bernieres in Normandië en bereikten na bloedige gevechten als één van de eerste Canadese eenheden de binnenstad van Caen. Ze waren ook intens betrokken in de bevrijding van de Pas de Calais. Op 9 oktober voeren ze met hun Buffalovaartuigen vanuit Terneuzen in een boog over de Schelde naar het Zeeuws-Vlaamse Hoofdplaat. Het regiment bevrijdde uiteindelijk samen met de “North Nova Scotia Highlanders” en de “Highland Light Infantry of Canada” op 1 en 2 november 1944 respectievelijk de laatste bezette Belgische gemeenten Knokke en Heist. Tijdens hun verblijf in de badstad zullen de veteranen in de regio de graven bezoeken van hun gevallen kameraden. De veteranen zullen vrijdag door het schepencollege officieel worden verwelkomd op het stadhuis van Knokke. De bevrijding van de badstad was destijds geen lachertje. Dat blijkt alvast uit een stukje interview met de Canadese veteraan Glen Tomlin.
